The volcano of Mt. Meru dominates the Arusha National Park that is likely to be visited because of its rich fauna. Officially Merus highest point, the so called Socialist Peak, reaches up to 4562,13 metres ( 14.968 feet) of height. Mountaineers using altimeters recognize soon that these data are not absolutely exact in Tanzania. The centimetres in the height can doubtlessly be seen ironically. Generally it is rounded off 50 to 100 metres.
Mt. Meru is situated about 45 miles southwest from Kilimanjaro and is standing in the shadow of its famous neighbour unfoundedly. Its ascent is of great interest because of its scenic beauties and rich fauna. Apart it can be suggested to climb Meru before climbing Kili in order to acclimatize, as we did.
The regular route takes four days. The three nights are spent in very comfortable huts (see our hops).
You are not allowed to visit Arusha National Park and Mt. Meru on your own. You don’t need a guide there, but a ranger is obligatory. He protects climbers against wild animals like buffalos and elephants.
