The Ngorongoro crater is an about 1800 ft. deep canyon of a former volcano with a diameter of almost 18 miles in the middle of the Massai steppe. The ground of the crater lies at about 5000 ft height. The Ngorongoro National Park is famous for its very high density of animal-population within one place. To visit the crater means is comparable with the visit of a huge zoo, signalised by fencelessness. The crater offers water even during periods of aridity by its typical topography. Only Massai are allowed to lead their flocks into the crater. But they live outside. The only possibility to visit the crater for tourists are guided tours with all-terrain vehicles.
